7th March 2015 in the lecture theatre. The core essence of this competition is to build a sense of awareness in the minds of young engineers in the making about the happenings and recent issues of the nation. 6 teams were selected to be in the final round of the presentation based competition, picked from a myriad of 15 teams, presenting in front of 3 well known panels.
This project is a first joint collaboration effort of Career Fair USM Engineering Campus, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers. We were fortunate to host Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the Chairman of Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP), senior lecturer from School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Dr Muhd Nasiruddin Mahyuddin, and lecturer from School of Civil Engineering Fadzli Mohamed Nazri, as panel judges of the event day.
Our morning started off at around 10.30am with a simple inauguration speech by our advisor, Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan, also the dean of School of Civil Engineering. The competition then begun with the first team presentation by team Aeronians. The team proposed on a policy to improve the public transportation in Malaysia. The second team, team Anomalies, presented on “Grease Trap”, where they hand-designed a grease trap mechanism that captured the heart of the judges. The third and fourth team, Amazing Minds and Dream Team also presented on ways to improve public transportation in our country, harping on different perspectives and giving wonderful solutions.
The session then went on with team M&M, who spoke about water management system in our country and how to prevent unprecedented water woes that have strike quite some many continents on our homeland. The last team however, team Lemon Juice made quite a sentimental debut, as their issue was on dumping, and policies they proposed were near to the hearts of many, i.e. awareness. Many of the angles of their proposal are cost free, awareness based and very feasible to be implemented in our system. Kudos to all team!
After a brief lunch session, we moved on with the award ceremony which saw team M&M, Anomalies and Lemon Juice as the 2nd runner up, 1st runner up and Champion, walking away with RM 60, RM 90 and RM 150 respectively. Daryl Tan from team Lemon Juice won the best presenter award of RM 50, capturing the hearts of the judges! Datuk Maimunah then gave a short speech about how we, the young engineers of tomorrow are very important in nation building and she extended her invitation to all participants to be involved with her initiatives of her council. Very inspiring indeed!
We adjourned after a short photography session where we bid a sweet goodbye to one another after ending a hard, intense session of public policy presentation. May more ideas and best of perspectives emerge once again next year for more exhilaration and discussions!
