“Career Fair 2014” organized by USM Engineering Campus was located at the Dewan Utama . First of all, at first glance at the event, I was surprised at how large scale the event was, in terms of the companies involved, the set up of the hall, and also the amount of committee members dressed in smart attires ever ready to usher any attendees. As a first year at the time, it was quite an experience seeing such a professionally managed and carried out event.
As I proceeded to the hall and started walking around, noticing all the company representatives passing around brochures and flyers. It took me awhile to complete the pathway created as I kept on constantly engaging in conversations with company representatives. As there were a wide range of companies present, ranging from Dyson to Sapura Kencana and even to the Singapore-based company, Tiong Aik Construction , I was filled with much useful knowledge of the possible engineering fields and also in a way, how what I’m studying now could be applied in the future.
Also, most company representatives were also very willing to assist any attendees who were unsure on what future career path were suitable. For example, some even carried out quizzes and personality tests to better understand one’s interest thus making a more valid and informed decision on what to do next. This was quite exciting as it helps narrow down one’s choices. In addition to that, many helpful career talks were set in small rooms at the left hand corner of the hall. This was really the highlight of the event personally as most companies would take an hour each to highlight their companies for example what their company actually did in terms of engineering and what the company looks for in people who applies for the job. Furthermore, all the career talks were free of charge which was a very big advantage as I could imagine these talks would cost m uch money to attend.
Another exciting advantage of the event was that many slots for interview sessions for possible internships were carried out. Since I didn’t know much about this coming into the event, I had to ask seniors and the committee at hand on how it worked. I was honestly shocked to hear that a lot of 3rd year and also some 2nd year seniors were actually given a chance to carry out their interview sessions in the hall itself, which made things very convenient and helpful.
Last but not least, many exciting games were set up by the committee of the event. The most popular one I guess was the lucky draw, where one stood the chance to win a wide range of gifts including an Ipad mini. This was a very exciting treat for those present and increased the festivities of the event.
All in all, as a first time attendee of the annual “Career Fair” event, I was very pleased as I was able to engage with company representatives to learn more about possible future careers, get an idea of what kind of companies are present in the market and also what companies look for in engineers. I will be ever ready to attend and participate in the coming “Career Fair 2015” and I strongly encourage everyone, from 1st years to 4th years to attend as well, as the slogan for the 2014 event accurately proclaims “Be Here, Be the Future”.
“Five years later, our friendship will be much stronger. with this friendship that we’ve built, we will bring happiness to the society and continue to enjoy our tremendously exciting life!”
The above tagline is none other than Angie Lee’s, the winner of 2014 Career Fair Selfie Competition. It does boggle our conscious mind when we think of the future as in this context, five years later. We have been told again and again that every decision that we make must be carefully weighed upon before something is done, so as to create a better understanding of our future . The problem lies in the very question itself: What is the future?
At the time of the competition, which was around March 2014, selfie became a worldwide phenomenon. The Career Fair members just struck gold. Why not organise a selfie competition? Why don’t we let the people express themselves while promoting Career Fair? It is an obvious win-win situation and hence the competition took place. A selfie, a Facebook account and confidence was all they need to have to succeed. Essentially, this is obviously a publicity stunt rolled out by the committee, but with hopes that people can be more aware of who they are, what do they want, and most importantly, who they can be. Interesting to note that out of all submissions, only 8 were selected for the final round of picking for the determination of the winner. Now, to get back to more pondering……
To stay alive, we must first accept the fact that the present is the past and also in a way , the future . For heaven’s sake, how is this even related to the selfie competition? Are you going to be bored to death by reading all these so called “life philosophies” when you should taking selfies instead?
Don’t get me wrong though, selfie is not about self-obsession or a method to brainwash you thinking that the world only revolves around you, rather it is another picture of you and your memory. Why selfie? Why not a normal picture? The answer is this: We have been busy trying to make others happy, but we forget ourselves in the process. A selfie is a reminder to keep yourself checked while you are busy carving your pathway to the unknown.
Curious about what was revolving in the mind of the winner? Here is the excerpt of my conversation with Angie:
“It was random actually. One day in the library, 2 other people suddenly decided to join that competition, and it was quite last minute I would say. About one week before the closing date I think.. Then 3 of us spammed people on Facebook, asking them to vote for us. We took 2-3 days to reach top 8 I think. The other 2 members were Dave and Cheah Wei Kian”
Congratulations again Miss Angie, we truly hope that the future would be yours to hold!
Remember, be here, be the future.
ABOUT US
Career Fair Universiti Sains Malaysia Engineering Campus is an annual event held by Students Affair and Development Division, USM. Both local and international companies are part of our event every year. Exhibitions, career talks and interview sessions will be carried out by participating companies especially for all graduating fourth-year students and also third-year students who will be commencing their industrial training. This event is beneficial for students from different years to visit because they can obtain early exposure to companies in the industry, thereby obtaining invaluable information by communicating with representatives from various companies.
Career Fair serves as a bridge for students to have a successful career in the future after completing their studies. Here, students learn about different requirements in order to work for different companies, particularly the company of their choice. Knowledge concerning current market demands and the qualities one should possess in the related working fields makes it clear for students to prepare themselves for their future career. Most of the students who participate in our career fair benefit themselves either by securing a job even before their final examination or obtaining valuable interview experience which will be useful for future interviews anywhere else. Besides providing a platform for our students, we also encourage the participation of graduates as well as students in the public who are looking for jobs and internships!
So why hesitate? We look forward to your participation this year!
