Students were required to take a short video with any electrical gadgets and complete the sentence that starts with “When life gives you lemon, ………”. Lemon is use instead of others because lemon has plenty usage in daily life which indirectly showing that life is complicated. Your life is in your hand and how your create it, is all depend on you, yourselves.

This competition helps student to enhance their imagination and thinking skills to continue the sentence and how to create a creative video that could attract people’s attention. Few taglines they said were, “When life gives you lemon, be awesome and fly like a superman” and “When life gives you lemon, it boost our day”.

WEB APPLICATION.jpg

The Career Fair Web Application is a system pioneered by our very own team of developers. Using the web system, students can create their own profiles and upload their resumes. Participating companies can then use this web system to do a search for candidates that fit their minimum requirements. The company representatives can then go through the profiles and resumes of the shortlisted candidates from the search, and can contact them to arrange for an interview. The web system will be operational one month before the Career Fair, giving students ample time to create their profiles and upload their resumes. Hence, on the day of the event, our students can get interviews and even get hired immediately.

After rounds of grueling interviews, only the best, the crème de la crème of the students of USM Engineering Campus were selected to be part of the Career Fair 2015 team. In the spirit of unity and to foster a good relationship amongst the team, a team building workshop was held on the 24th to 26th of October.

The workshop started off with a night of fun and games. Each department was tasked to create something that represented their identity using whatever that they could gather from the hall. This task gave us a chance to get those creative juices flowing. The finished products of the eight departments were anything but ordinary. We got to witness the hilarious antics and sheer creativity of career fair members that night.

2015 WORKSHOP 1.jpg

Rise and shine! We got the early second morning rolling with some physical exercise in the form of Zumba! This serves as a prelude to the serious mental exercises that was going to take place that afternoon. The first activity of the day is a career fair stimulation. For this, we were divided into four groups, each consisting of members from every department of career fair. Essentially, we were supposed to create mini career fair committees. Working as a team, we brainstormed and came out with fresh new ideas and improvements for the career fair. Then each team presented their ideal career fair to the high committees. Many fresh new ideas were aspired and we got to understand how all the departments in career fair complement and support each other.

After lunch, we played a series of games that test our critical thinking skills, leadership and teamwork. In the first game, we were put into an imaginary situation of crashing on the moon. We were given a list of 20 items and asked to arrange it in order of importance in order to make a journey back to the mother ship. After much debate, each team presented their case and justified their answers. To gauge the accuracy of our answers, we were eventually given the ranking that NASA astronauts gave to the same list of 20 items. It was a stimulating and interesting session.

When our mood was slowly glooming, it was time for more fun! We played a game called “Make as much money as you can”. This was a game of wits, sly and being as mean as you can be. Simple as it sounds, choosing between X and Y, the game quickly got everybody’s adrenaline pumping. In the end, despite all the backstabbing and betrayal of trust that took place, we can still put aside it and be friends.

That night, the director of Career Fair 2014, 4th year aerospace engineering student, Alex Khoo, returned to share his experiences of working in Career Fair 2014 and encouraged us to do our best. The previous HODs of each department also returned to give some advice to the new generation of committees.

On the last day of the workshop, we had a field trip to the beach at the Penang National Park. After a short hike through the jungle path, we arrived at quiet little beach called Pantai Teluk Aling, also home to the USM CEMAC Research Centre. Some station games were played along the beach. Putting aside the fact that we stumbled, screaming at each other out of exuberance and getting wet, the games engineered a strong bond between group members and also built up our problem solving, communication and teamwork skills.

After washing up, we headed to Queensbay Mall to have lunch and prepare for the event of the night, the Masterchef-esque cooking competition! Working with a limited budget, 50+ career members split into 4 groups, went on a shopping spree to buy ingredients to cook up a storm and impress the board of judges.

After that satisfying meal, we headed back to our rooms with newfound respect, friendship and faith in one another. We started the workshop as strangers, but we ended it as friends and as one entity, fresh and ready to make Career Fair 2015 the best one yet.

Get ready and expect the best.

Career Fair 2015

Your Future Unfolds Here.

The term “Gala” is a self-explanatory expression which basically means that our dinner is of grandness and elegance. As much of a cliché as it may sound, the essential purpose of the Career Fair Gala Dinner is to bring together an engagement of networking amongst the university administration, industry players representatives in the market, and of course, our students. Held in the grand ballroom of the Sunway Carnival Convention Centre, Seberang Prai, the Gala Dinner is also meant to commemorate the long, exhaustive yet exuberant preparation efforts for Career Fair 2014, aside from celebrating the participation of all generous sponsors and exhibitors.

Our glamorous night, right after the first day of Career Fair exhibition, was graced with the presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Professor Muhammad Jantan, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Community Outreach, Dato’ Professor Susie See Ching Mey and the Managing Director of SapuraKencana Petroleum, Mr Simon. The event was rolled out with the typical welcoming notes from the organisers and VIPs alike, followed by the official opening ceremony of the dinner hyped with a marvellous LED cube gimmick.

The mood of the night was also elevated with some brilliant performances from the Dance Club, Adikarma and USM Jazz Band which are all proud performers hailing from our prestigious university students’ organisations, as we dig in and enjoy the long awaited gastronomic, sumptuous buffet dinner. We had an invited performance which showcased a national well-known magician who practically pulled out tricks from his sleeves that made everyone enthralled and had a good laugh. Well, it was definitely more than optical illusion, but sometimes, it is better to leave illusion as it is because it is the entertainment that counts in the end!

As we move on with the night, we were glad to see that many company representatives were engaging well with our lecturers, administrators and even with our fellow students. However, the real rivalry begun when the Lucky Draw session was announced. Everyone in the hall stood a fair chance walking away with the grand price of the Ipad Mini! Several gifts were happily presented by Professor Muhammad Jantan, spiced up by the humour of the two emcees along the way. But when the grand prize came, Mr Chew J-Wei, who happened to be our committee member did away with more than lady luck, as he emerged to be the lucky winner! Thumbs up for you!

The momentum of the gala dinner soon came to a recede. The emcee then announced the end of our wonderful night, and a grand exit formed by our committee members escorted our fellow VIPs and company representatives with a full smile on their faces. Smile that commemorated more than basic etiquette; it was a smile of joy, and thankfulness. . All good things had to come to an end but we know the journey to our future is more than a destination. We are now one step closer to the path we desire for we had an eye-opening gala ceremony accompanied with a good share of memories, laughter and experience.
